‘The Carnival Float, Dominica, February 2022’

Dominica, known as the “nature island” of the Caribbean, Wai’tukubl to the Kalingaos. ‘The Real Mas’ takes place every February throughout the month, showcasing the island’s rich heritage and natural beauty. It is a fusion of traditional Caribbean carnival elements, indigenous traditions, and modern entertainment. It’s a wonderful to immerse yourself into Dominica’s culture. Carnival starts at 4am. As the light comes up and the costumes start to appear, the sense of freedom brews. Music, drums, rain, beer, chicken, costumes, colour, rum.

The Carnival highlights Dominica’s distinctive connection to its environment. The theme explores the island’s thriving wildlife, lush rainforests, and pristine beaches through colorful parades, street performances, and cultural exhibitions. There are displays of folk dances, calypso music, and creative costumes inspired by the island’s endemic species and natural landscapes.

Shot on film in November 2022 and printed in 2025.
